Rules of Prey is the first in John Sanford’s decades-old Lucas Davenport series. Looking for a new series to read, I finally decided to give the Davenport series a try.
Rules of Prey was an interesting read. There are many things I enjoyed about the book and Davenport. The plot was well done and suspenseful. I appreciated the book rotating between Davenport’s point of view and that of the Maddog, who was torturing and killing women.
One thing I didn’t like about the book was Davenport’s too loose morals. At the same time, he was sleeping with the chief witness in the case and a reporter he was feeding information to about the case. Then, after the reporter got pregnant, Davenport began feeding information to another female reporter.
On balance, Rules of Prey was a good book. Good enough to make me want to read the next in the series. But there are things that I could see convincing me to stop reading the series too.
