In Eyes of Prey, Lucas Davenport faces a new kind of evil in Minneapolis—a sociopathic killer named Carlo Druze, who teams up with a twisted pathologist, Dr. Michael Bekker. Bekker, obsessed with the mystery of death, orchestrates the murder of his wife, Elizabeth, using Druze to carry out the crime.
Davenport is drawn into the case as the city reels from the grisly nature of the murder, and the investigation uncovers a series of disturbing killings linked to Bekker and Druze. Bekker’s morbid fascination with death, combined with Druze’s brutal lack of conscience, creates a chilling combination.
The case is not just about solving murders but understanding the warped psyches behind them. Davenport, dealing with personal struggles, must track down these killers before more lives are lost, leading to a tense and suspenseful game of cat and mouse.
My Thoughts
Michael Bekker is one of the most disturbed characters I have read in a long time. He truly has no morals! Add to him Druze, who has no feelings around killing, and you have a truly twisted set of killers.
Another part of the plot that interested me was the contrast between Bekker, who is gorgeous, and Druze, who has a badly scarred face. In most settings, it would be hard to imagine people with such different lives being friends. But Bekker and Druze find appreciation in their enjoyment of killing–especially when they can kill people bothering them.
Once again in Eyes of Prey, Lucas Davenport’s personal life is not something I enjoy. In this book, he has a sexual relationship with a woman who is an important witness. While I wish Davenport didn’t sleep with witnesses, I do enjoy his character and the stories John Sandford has written about him.
If you like thrillers and you aren’t bothered by really messed up characters, Eyes of Prey will be worth your time.
