It has been a while since I have posted anything too personal. So, it’s time I share some really good news. As the title indicates, Yoyo will forever be part of our family! We are his forever home!
As a refresher, we adopted Yoyo from a shelter on February third. We chose him because he was the sweetest, friendliest cat we met at the shelter. We wanted to adopt a cat so I could try to have another little buddy, kind of like my beloved Mr. Rogers.
Desiree and I had absolutely no idea what we were doing when we adopted Yoyo. We didn’t understand how important and difficult the reality that he wasn’t neutered when we adopted him would become. We had no idea how hard it can sometimes be to get cats comfortable with their own species.
After a few bad encounters, during one of them Yoyo attacked Desiree’s cat Rain. Thanks to that, we spent months struggling to keep them apart while trying to slowly introduce them.
We met with a cat behaviorist several times. We medicated both cats. We put screens up in a couple of doorways so they could see each other without being able to hurt each other.
Then, about two months ago, Desiree accidentally let Yoyo out of the basement. He followed her to our room, where Rain started acting strange.
It took Desiree more than an hour to figure out both cats were in our room with the door closed. I think my running up from the basement and saying he was out helped us understand they were together.
Since nothing bad happened, we began having them spend a couple of hours a day together.
For the last several weeks, both cats have been out all the time. We no longer close doors. We no longer focus on where they both are all the time. We no longer wonder if they will get along; in fact, they are becoming friends. They even play together.
This development is great news for me. Yoyo has truly become my little fella. He loves to lightly claw on my chest while purring his head off. He has a wonderful, loud pur.
It was a lot of work and too much stress. But now that Yoyo and Rain are friends that part of our life is as nice as we hoped it would be when we adopted Yoyo.
