America is Not a Democracy

Introduction

One of the biggest myths we have to debunk is the constantly spread lie that America is a democracy. Obviously, no country could function as a pure democracy. But the idea that America is a democracy is absurd.

Maybe everyone reading this was taught to believe that America is a democracy. There is a reasonable chance that no one who reads this will begin reading it understanding that America is not a democracy. So, it’s time to go through some of the reasons why America is not a democracy.

Reasons Why America is Not a Democracy

No country even pretending to be a democracy could support something as undemocratic as the Electoral College. In anything that smelled like a democracy, every vote would actually count when choosing a leader. In this year’s presidential election, only seven states mattered because of the Electoral College. If the popular vote determined the presidency, which it would in a democracy, the entire election would have been different. Even the campaigns would have been different, because every eligible voter in the United States would have had a real chance to affect the result.

In something like a democracy, all citizens would have representation in the government. In the United States, the residents of the nation’s capital have no voting representation in Congress. And, of course, the people of Puerto Rico and the rest of America’s territories would also have representation in Congress if America was a democracy.

In an actual democracy, participation in the electoral process wouldn’t be tightly controlled by two private political parties. In the United States, two private political parties determine the rules for primaries, the rules for debates, and who can participate in the debates.

In a democracy, corporations wouldn’t have more of an ability to influence politicians and parties than do the people. In America, corporations can basically give as much as they want to politicians and political parties while individual contributions are capped. Of course, in an actual democracy wealthy people wouldn’t have more of a chance to influence politicians and political parties than do poor people, but I doubt there will ever be a country that is that fair.

Conclusion

Whether you like it or not, America has never been a democracy. America was established expressly to not be a democracy. Unless the Constitution is rewritten, America will never be a democracy.

I'd love to hear from you.
