In Naked Prey, the 14th novel in John Sandford’s Prey series, Lucas Davenport investigates a racially charged double murder in rural Minnesota. Two bodies—one of a white woman and one of a Black man—are found hanging together, leading the local community to suspect a lynching. As Davenport delves into the case, he discovers a more complex and sinister web of motives, including drug dealing, sexual exploitation, and personal vendettas.

Assisted by his new protégé, Lettie West, a resourceful teenager from a troubled background, Davenport uncovers hidden connections between the victims and the small town’s secrets. The investigation takes dangerous turns as powerful figures in the community seek to protect their interests, leading to threats, violence, and a climactic confrontation.

The novel explores themes of prejudice, corruption, and loyalty, blending Sandford’s trademark suspense, sharp dialogue, and well-drawn characters. Lettie’s introduction adds a fresh dynamic to the series, setting the stage for future collaborations with Davenport.

My Thoughts

Naked Prey was a good addition to the series. I am hoping that Lettie will add new and interesting storylines to the series, but I’m worried that she will be made too powerful and her involvement will not be very realistic. There was already some of that in this book. She seemed more comfortable shooting at another person and running away under dangerous situations than kids are naturally. I think creators put kids in troubled situations and use that as a justification for their being able to handle things the vast majority of adults can’t handle.

All of that being said, Naked Prey was one of the most exciting books in the series to date. There were plot twists I didn’t see coming. I had a hard time putting this one down.

I'd love to hear from you.
