This summary was generated by ChatGPT.

Broken Prey is the 16th book in John Sandford’s Prey series, featuring detective Lucas Davenport. In this thriller, Davenport is tasked with investigating a series of brutal murders in Minnesota. The victims share a horrifying commonality: they are tortured before being killed.

The investigation leads Davenport to focus on Charlie Pope, a recently released mental patient with a violent history. As Davenport hunts Pope, the body count rises, and the pressure to find the killer escalates. However, the case takes unexpected turns as Davenport begins to suspect that the murders might not be the work of a single individual but part of a larger and more sinister plan.

Interwoven with the main plot is Davenport’s introspection about his personal life, as well as the recurring characters and subplots that add depth and tension to the story. The novel is a mix of psychological insights into the mind of a killer, intense action, and Sandford’s characteristic dark humor.

Broken Prey is praised for its fast-paced narrative, vivid characters, and chilling portrayal of violence, making it a compelling entry in the Prey series.

My Thoughts

Broken Prey is the best of the Lucas Davenport books I have read so far.

I really appreciate the way the killer was able to, for most of the book, manipulate Davenport and the rest of the police. That is what kept me guessing.

The different aspects of the other characters that shown through in this story were also helpful in keeping the story interesting.

Lastly, I’m glad Lucas seems ready to be an adult. It’s nice seeing him doing his job without crossing ethical boundaries.

I highly recommend Broken Prey. If you have not read any of the previous 15 books in the series, you may want to start with those.

I'd love to hear from you.
