Personal Updates for February 13

Introduction

It has been a while since I posted one of these. So, here it goes.

In this post, I will cover the following:

  • Valentine’s Day
  • Winter
  • Looking for Work
  • Learning a Bit About Coding
  • Looking forward to baseball

Valentine’s Day

Having someone to have a date with for Valentine’s Day still seems a bit strange. For years, it looked like I would never be sharing Valentine’s day with someone. Now, this will be my second Valentine’s Day married to Desiree.

If the weather gets better in time, Desiree and I are planning on going to Morton’s Steakhouse in Portland on Saturday. Since we rarely get to have a date, I’m looking forward to it. I expect it will be an evening of great food shared with my wonderful life partner!

Winter

I’m sure I have mentioned it before, but I hate winter. As I write this it may be snowing. If not, it will be soon. Either way, it has been very cold this week. I want to shoot baskets again. I want to go swimming. I miss sitting on the swing with Desiree. Even though I know we are lucky to still have seasons here, I’m ready for winter to be over!

Looking for Work

In case I didn’t mention it here, I was laid off from my job on November first. My layoff was illegal. So, I filed with the EEOC and my union has filed unfair labor practices. While I wait for those legal situations to unfold, I’m looking for work.

As always, it’s not easy for a blind person to be out of work. Discrimination is sadly very real. Given today’s political realities, discrimination is most likely getting worse. Still, I have always believed I will land on my feet. The discrimination will, as it always has, make finding work harder. So will the reality that many entities will take their cues from the federal government and stop caring about civil rights laws. Still, I will land on my feet.

I have applied for a few dozen jobs so far. I have a few more I’m going to apply for soon. I have three more interviews already scheduled.

At the same time, Desiree and I are starting a consultancy. With some luck I will be able to share more about that in the near future.

In the meantime, feel free to let me know if you are aware of any jobs I should consider.

Learning a Bit About Coding

Thanks to my new friends with the Blindness Information Technology Specialists (BITS), I’m taking a class that comes free with my membership. The class is teaching me more about markdown, HTML, and will eventually teach me more about WordPress. This may not mean much to most of you reading this, but for a nerd like me it’s cool.

The people with BITS who are managing the class are really knowledgeable and nice. I always learn something from and have a few laughs with them. I hope Desiree and I can meet some of them at the ACB convention this year.

Looking Forward to Baseball

Anyone who has read much on this site knows I’m a huge baseball fan! I’m so glad pitchers and catchers have reported to spring training. I can’t wait to hear a live baseball game again. I miss the crack of the bat. I miss thinking about the games and their strategies. And, of course, I love that baseball is, for the most part, played outside under the warm sun.

I'd love to hear from you.
